Foreign new graduates stages

The University of Bologna organises temporary placements for foreign new graduates within companies located in Emilia-Romagna.

What is the "Leonardo" programme?

"Leonardo" is a programme financed by the European Union with the main aim of promoting the development of University-Industry cooperation with regard to professional training.

Who can be a Leonardo grantholder?

A university new graduate that:

  • comes from a university of a European country;
  • is interested in gaining economic, professional and cultural knowledge of another country, with practical reference to technological aspects;
  • is strongly motivated to work in a business that operates in a sector that matches his/her university background;
  • is carefully selected by the university-industry consortium or by his/her university, who will monitor the organisation of the placement
  • wants to enter the world of work with an improved knowledge of professional culture and an international mentality

The duration of the placement can vary from 3 to 12 months.

What are the advantages of hosting a Leonardo grantholder in your company?

  • the Leonardo grantholder can introduce new ideas into the work environment and undertake projects that require qualified personnel, increasing the work force when needed without the obligation of permanent employment on the part of the company;
  • the linguistic knowledge of the grantholder can provide the company with new opportunities for making business contacts across domestic and foreign labour markets
  • a foreign trainee creates an international atmosphere within the company;
  • the Leonardo placements offer an opportunity to integrate new technology and to further links with universities and Europe.

How much does this cost for the company?

The company contribution from the European Union to the grantholders only partially covers the travel and subsistance expenses. The company can contribute to the grant through cash or other facilities.

During the placement, the grantholders are covered by insurance in the case of accidents and the civil responsibility. The company will allocate a tutor to the grantholder who will have the task of supervising and assisting the beneficiary and maintaining links with the sending university.

What do companies interested in hosting a Leonardo grantholder have to do?

Companies should send a detailed offer of the placement to I.L.O. "UETP Alma Mater" by filling the form which can be downloaded here. [DOC] [RTF]

I.L.O. "UETP Alma Mater" will match the company offer with the trainee's CV, which will be sent to the company for evaluation and selection. For a better evaluation, and in order to check his/her linguistic skills, it is advised contacts the candidate by telephone.

A contract will be signed between the grantholder, the hosting company and the sending University or the organisation that will provide the grant.

At the end of the placement, the company is required to produce a placement report of the grantholder.

Insurance cover

Health insurance: new graduates should have the E111 form that is valid for stays of up to 6 months (for a stay of longer than 6 months the E128 form is required instead). Both forms are obtained from local Health Department Services offices and provide students with refundable health care.

Accidents in the workplace: the University of Bologna's insurance covers trainees for accidents that may occur whilst carrying out activities at the host company and whilst travelling to and from their place of residence and place of work.

If trainees choose to take out private insurance, they should always keep the policy, its number and any emergency contact numbers to hand. In case they have a private insurance, they should refer to the Italian consulates in their own countries to check the validity of the insurance in Italy and bring an authorized translation of the contract.
